This overcoat, which dates from the 1960s, is made from a luxurious medium-weight blend of wool and cashmere. The colour is ‘midnight blue’, the very dark shade of blue which appears as black in most lights and is a colour long associated with luxurious formal wear. The coat has a ‘fly-front’ and comes in what is known as a ‘Chesterfield’ style. Coats of this style are often referred to as ‘Crombies’, the style being named after the Crombie woollen mill whose fabrics were often used to make them. This example has angled pockets, complete with flaps, which is an unusual – and rather refined – twist on the more common style.
