This 1960s British hacking jacket was designed by Hardy Amies for the Hepworths menswear shop. Amies was a legendary figure in the British fashion industry who, in 1964, wrote a style guidebook, ‘ABC of Men's Fashion’, which remains a favourite among menswear enthusiasts and offered the opening advice: “A man should look as if he had bought his clothes with intelligence, put them on with care, and then forgotten all about them.” The hacking jacket is one of the most distinctive of classic British jackets and, with its nipped-waist and flared skirt, it is also one of the most flattering. The style was originally made for horse riding but became popular for casual wear from the 1930s onwards when the equestrian look was adopted by British men of all classes. The jacket has the high button-stance, ticket pocket and double rear-vents that are distinctive features of the hacking jacket style.
