Dating from the 1950s/1960s, and made for ‘John Collier’ menswear brand, this is the classic British style of overcoat. Although officially known as a ‘Chesterfield’, coats of this style are often referred to as ‘Crombies’, the style being named after the Crombie woollen mill whose fabrics were often used to make them. The coat has a ‘Milium’ lining. This was a new type of lining that was developed in the USA in the early 1950s and made by Deering, Milliken & Co. The cloth had an added layer of metallic thread (on the side of the lining that faced away from the body) that was intended to provide the wearer with extra insulation and warmth. N.B. The normal chest allowance on a vintage overcoat is 6 inches, however this coat has an 8 inch allowance. As such, it should fit someone with a larger chest than the size (marked as 42).
